Arizona’s new 20-week abortion ban goes into effect Thursday, with very real effects for families expecting babies with fatal fetal defects. The Arizona Republic reports on volunteer services rising to the challenge of helping parents cope with the trauma of watching infants die within minutes, hours, or days of birth.
House Bill 2036, which measures a fetus’ gestational age from the first day of the woman’s last period, prevents abortion after 18 weeks of pregnancy, making it the most extreme ban in the nation. Most fetal abnormalities are detected during this period, but the ban forbids abortions even when the doctor discovers a fatal defect. The woman must then carry to term a baby who will almost certainly die as soon as it is born.
MISS Foundation and Embrace are non-profits specifically working to develop birth plans for such families, provide counseling, and prepare funeral services. The Legislature has allocated no funding for these services, which are expected to kick into high demand once the abortion ban goes into effect.
About 100 pregnancies are terminated after 20 weeks in Arizona each year. According to Joanne Cacciatore, the CEO of MISS Foundation, one or two families a month currently seek their help preparing for a fatal birth. But they expect their resources to be stretched past maximum capacity soon.
this just breaks my fucking heart.
i could go on about how there *STILL* after all this time, isn’t a coordinated meaningful respose to these ever increasing violations against birthing people or what a travesty it is that justice minded folks still refuse to connect all the openly white supremacists in congress to reproductive rights/control—
but in the end—who fucking cares.
arizona whupps my ass time and time again—and this is just fucking devastating.
why can’t mental illness be like any other kind of sickness where you go to hospital and your loved ones come and give you flowers and tell you that they love you and hold your hand and make sure you get better
why doesn’t that happen instead of awkward silences and embarrassing tears and messy bedsheets and a bunch of other stuff no one actually talks about
because i walk everywhere and must face so much harassment. I don’t put on display my fabulous self. but i wish i could walk the street the world unmolested, by the male population. Men are such a nuisance , that i look through all dudes now, i don’t bother talking , hearing , looking at them….
In a current case arguing for same-sex marriage in Illinois, a right-wing group led by Peter LaBarbera is demanding that Judge Sophia Hall recuse herself from the case because she’s openly lesbian. Much like what happened in the Prop 8 case, conservatives say she can’t impartially determine whether marriage is a constitutional right that should be given to gay couples.
Hall is part of an LGBT legal group that has participated in pride parades and promotes equality for all people, and according to LaBarbera’s logic, that makes her unfit to judge the case. Similar arguments have been used to stop gay nominees from being appointed to state courts in Virginia and New Jersey.
This is so ridiculous.
Only straight people can determine the constitutionality of gay marriage.
Only men can decide which reproductive rights women should have.
Only white people can assess the constitutionality of stop-and-frisk, voter ID laws, etc.
I’m really trying not to hate everyone right now, but really? More of this shit?
This has got to be the stupidest shit I’ve heard today.
First off, she apparently can’t be trusted to do her job correctly and determine the constitutionality of the measure. And secondly, fuck whether or not the shit’s constitutional. It’s not some holy, static document. These are people’s lives we’re talking about.
There’s a happening in Anaheim. Today at 4pm at Anaheim City Hall, people gathered in protest to voice their opinions on the unjust actions that occurred over the weekend involving the Anaheim Police Department. It started off angry, but peaceful. About 30 minutes in people began to assemble in front of the city counsel doors as the meeting began, people chanting, and holding up signs. Minutes later cops lined up outside the doors with helmets and batons trying to back us up, we stood strong. officer then jabbed an older man with a baton, and people got a little more aggressive. We then block the streets in a march to the Anaheim Police station, it was peaceful and awesome to see hundreds of people in the streets of Anaheim, the group was fluid and moved in unison. We stood outside of the APD for a good few moments and decided to head back together to city hall. Back at city hall we stood again outside chanting, gathered. After a few minutes a cop car came out that said “Keep away Police K9” we gathered around the police car and he started to back off. As the car backed away 6 cops jumped out of nowhere with big guns ( i assumed rubber bullets) and ran towards the people at City hall we all started running towards them the cops got up and started to fall back. People were throwing bottles and sand telling them to “go away” they backed off. After they backed off hundreds of cops gathered around from all over Orange County, we stood strong, things were calm and they backed away. Some of heard that others demonstrators were waiting on Ball and Anaheim Blvd, we divided and about 100 of us took to the streets. We ended up at the Yogi’s death place and were blocked in by swat all around. We then separated and ended up back at city hall. Back at city hall cops trapped a group of people near the mortuary, the chief of police then made an announcement around 9 pm of a dispersal Order. Once that happened, cops started to shoot the people in the mortuary, and started shooting at us, and throw tear gas, people started fleeing, the cops lined up and walked towards us shooting at us. A man was standing holding his two fingers in a peace sign and about five/six cops shoot at him continually as he yelled ” No justice, No peace” A few of us stood close chanting, and as they continued to shoot. After a few minutes people began to run off and started to break shit. Cops came in closer closing us in. Near the destroyed starbucks a man was standing, the cops shoot his let and arrested him. We all were in the parking lot, people started to burn trashcans, cops kept shooting. walking in on us. People chanting, yelling, cursing. After awhile, the area was almost empty and people were scattered. This is when I decided to leave. The bushes were on fire and I put them out with my feet. As I left I got a flat tire on my bike. Near the freeway, police from Irvine came zooming down, and more helicopters flew over head. I came home in hopes that all the media there would be showing what was happening, but of course there was NOTHING.
‘The U.S. Government has been caught conducting an insane amount of vile, inhumane and grisly experiments on humans without their consent and often without their knowledge. So in light of recent news of the U.S. infecting Guatemalans with STDs, here are the 13 most evil, for lack of a better word, cases of human-testing as conducted by the United States of America. Get ready to become one of those conspiracy theory nuts, because after this list, you will never fully trust your government again.’
A writer for the new york times interviewed a series of people who had survived jumping off the golden gate bridge. Every person she interviewed admitted that about two thirds of the way down, they realized that every seemingly meaningless problem that caused them to jump was fixable.
Mental illness. (lost soul, complicated psyche, quiet loner, misunderstood, frustrated with life, experienced recent, traumatic, life-altering events that set him off; not to mention all the positive descriptors that are attached to him, i.e. intelligent, PhD candidate, honor roll student, etc.)
Other people are not your property. In other words: They are not yours to boss around. Their lives are not yours to micromanage. The fruits of their labor are not yours to dispose of. It doesn’t matter how wise or marvelous or useful it would be for other people to do whatever it is you’d like them to do. It is none of your business whether they wear their seat-belts, worship the right god, have sex with the wrong people, or engage in market transactions that irritate you. Their choices are not yours to direct. They are human beings like yourself, your equal. You possess no legitimate authority over them. As long as they do not themselves step over the line and start treating other people as their property, you have no moral basis for initiating violence against them ‘ nor for authorizing anyone else to do so on your behalf.
